Your Guide to Exterior Aquarium Design Ideas
The purpose of this article is to give you some new aquarium design ideas so that you can improve the placement of your existing aquarium or set your first time aquarium in an interesting way. This article does not cover the basics of keeping an aquarium. Those basics have a lot to with what kind of fish you chose to have. However, the type of fish you have should have an effect on your aquarium design since certain types of designs work better for some kinds of fish than others. This means that before you start planning your aquarium you should have some sense of the basic needs of your fish. You will need to research this before you begin.
Here are some of the key aquarium design ideas:
Placement
When people are trying to come up with aquarium design ideas, they often tend to focus on what goes on within the four walls of the aquarium, but this leaves out one of the key things that you can do to create interest in your aquarium. Most people tend to put aquariums up against a wall or in a corner. If you have lots of kids or dogs barreling around your house and are afraid they may knock your aquarium down, then this might be a good idea.
If you don’t have a specific reason for putting your aquarium up against a wall then consider having it jut out. If you have a large living room space, then you might use the aquarium as a natural divider, like a partial wall. This doubles the view of your aquarium and makes it more of a conversation piece for visitors to your home. If you design the interior of your aquarium well then it can justify this prominent place in your home.
Another great place for an aquarium is right behind your coach. (Be sure to mount it on an aquarium stand or sturdy table.) The trickling noise of the filter and the view of the fish can be very relaxing--much more so than a television.
Aquarium Shape
People tend not to consider the shape of their aquarium. Most aquariums are oblong. However, you can also find aquariums in other shapes. Some are hexagonal and rise up tall instead of being wide. This can make for an interesting shape for certain types of fish and for tight fits in your home.
One of the most interesting shapes and placements I have seen is an aquarium that was built into the side of a hallway wall so that it gave a view into the bedroom as you walked by. It was impressive even if impractical for privacy reasons. Most of us, of course, can’t afford to custom design such architectural features, but we can think through areas where an aquarium might work best.
Lighting
One of the more interesting and relatively simple things you can do to create for an interesting aquarium design setup is to place lights in such a way that they shine somewhat through the aquarium so that when you turn out the room lights you get a watery glow that fills your living space. People who have their aquariums in their bedrooms especially like this effect. They say that it can create a greatly soothing mood and really make the bedroom a calming space for sleep and long late night talks with your significant other.
When placing lights, of course, you will want to make sure that you don’t disturb the environment of the fish. Some fish are very sensitive to light and may go into hiding if they get too much of it.
Mirrors
If you have a smallish aquarium, one interesting way to create the illusion of greater depth is to place a mirror along the back wall of the aquarium. Even if you know that it is there, your mind will still make you think the aquarium goes back further than it actually does.
Hopefully, these ideas have helped you come up with a more interesting aquarium design. A well thought out design give your aquarium an aesthetical that it might have lacked beforehand.
